15 minutes to change the way you see the world

What Is a Cataract?

A cataract is the clouding of your eye’s natural lens, often due to aging. This condition can cause blurry vision, glare, difficulty seeing at night, and faded colors. Cataracts develop gradually and may affect one or both eyes, interfering with daily activities if left untreated.

Cataracts are diagnosed through a comprehensive eye exam that includes visual acuity testing, slit-lamp examination, and retinal evaluation.

These tests help to detect lens clouding, assess its impact on vision, and determine whether it’s time to consider treatment options tailored to your individual needs.

Cataracts are treated with surgery when vision loss begins to affect daily life. At Sewickley Eye Group, we offer Advanced Cataract Surgery (ACS) which uses the latest appropriate proven technology. .ACS uses tiny incisions, no sutures, causes less inflammation resulting in quicker surgery, and precise results often in less than 15 minutes while the patient is gently sedated.  Many patients experience clearer vision by the next day.

We offer advanced technology implants at the time of cataract surgery. Depending on the patient’s needs, Astigmatism Correcting Lenses and Multifocal Intraocular Lenses, which are implanted during surgery often reduce the need for glasses after cataract surgery. Our surgeons meet our patients and take the time to explain all of the patients options.  Many other centers do not have the surgeon discuss the patient’s options and desires and fears before the day of surgery. .  Surgery is done at one of several hospitals and surgical centers close to your home.

Glaucoma
Treatment

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, often due to elevated eye pressure. It can lead to gradual, irreversible vision loss, starting with peripheral vision. Because it typically develops without symptoms, early detection and ongoing management are essential to protecting long-term sight.

Glaucoma is diagnosed through a series of tests, including measuring intraocular pressure, visual field testing, and optic nerve imaging. These exams help detect early signs of damage, even before noticeable symptoms appear. Regular eye exams are the best way to catch glaucoma early and prevent permanent vision loss.

Sewickley Eye Group offers a range of glaucoma treatments, from medicated eye drops and laser procedures to surgical options. Our specialists tailor treatment plans to manage pressure levels, preserve vision, and slow disease progression, helping patients maintain their eyesight and quality of life.

What Is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration is a progressive eye disease that damages the macula, the central part of the retina, leading to loss of central vision. This condition can severely affect daily activities like reading, driving, and recognizing faces. It is a leading cause of vision loss, especially in adults over the age of 50.

Diagnosis of macular degeneration involves a comprehensive eye exam with specialized tests such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) and retinal imaging. These tools allow doctors to detect early signs of macular changes and monitor disease progression, helping to guide timely and effective treatment strategies.

Sewickley Eye Group offers advanced treatment options for macular degeneration, including AREDS-based vitamins like Mac Regen, intravitreal injections, laser therapy, and low vision aids. While there is no cure, our personalized approach helps slow progression, preserve vision, and improve quality of life for patients living with this condition.

Retinal imaging (fundus photography) to capture detailed images of the retina

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to scan for swelling or fluid in the retina

Fluorescein angiography to assess blood flow and leakage in retinal vessels

Visual acuity and eye pressure tests to check for vision changes or glaucoma

Even if you’re not experiencing symptoms, regular eye exams are critical for early detection and effective treatment.

Careful Control of blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure as well as quitting smoking are essential to reverse Diabetic Eye Disease. Dry Eye
Treatment

What Is Dry Eye Syndrome?

Dry eye syndrome occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears or the right kind of tears to stay lubricated. This can cause burning, redness, irritation, blurred vision, and light sensitivity. Chronic dry eye can affect daily comfort and eye health if left untreated.

Our ophthalmologists use specialized tests to evaluate tear production and eye surface health. By assessing symptoms and identifying underlying causes, we can accurately diagnose dry eye syndrome and determine the most effective treatment approach to restore comfort and clarity.

Sewickley Eye Group offers both medical and minor surgical treatments for chronic dry eye. Options may include prescription eye drops, punctal plugs, or in-office procedures to reduce inflammation and restore moisture. Our personalized care helps patients find lasting relief from discomfort and protect their long-term eye health.

What Is a Cornea?

The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye. It plays a vital role in focusing light for sharp vision. Healthy corneas are essential to clear sight, and any damage, infection, or disease can significantly affect how well you see.

Our specialists treat a range of corneal and external eye conditions, from pink eye and allergies to more serious issues like herpes infections, shingles, corneal ulcers, and degenerative diseases.
